SSP INTRODUCES UNIQUE SPLIT COLUMN
For Mezzanine Installation In Tight Spaces
Oaks, PA - Schmidt Structural Products has developed a new split column assembly for mezzanines that permits installations where overhead obstructions would otherwise interfere with the full column length. The advantages of Schmidt's split column are: 1) it is easier to maneuver and lift in two half-size sections; and 2) it can be designed with openings at the bolted connections to permit obstructions such as sprinkler piping to pass through, eliminating the extensive cost of re-routing existing mechanical systems.
The design was originally created to solve specific issues at a Newark InOne electronics distribution facility in Gaffney, SC. In this case, the largest obstacle was the fact that this mezzanine would have to be constructed over top of existing carousels. These carousels had only 2' of clearance between them and that 2' of space was needed for access. Also, there was an extensive fire sprinkler system both inside the carousel and directly in the center of the access aisle between the carousels. Both the carousels and the sprinkler systems created a huge problem with respect to installing columns and supports.
Because the full 18-foot columns would have been impossible to maneuver in the narrow space, Schmidt developed a split column system specifically to allow their installers to handle and assemble a shorter column section between the carousels at ground level. These ended roughly half-way up at the location of the sprinkler system. The bolted connection of each column was pre-engineered to leave a space through which the sprinkler piping ran.
This unique split column assembly is but one example of the type of innovative thinking the engineers at Schmidt apply to every unique challenge. Many times as in the case of Newark InOne when other manufacturers walk away from difficult jobs, Schmidt's design team finds a way to make it work, saving the customer the cost and trouble of expensive alternatives.
