MAXIMIZING FLOOR SPACE
With New & Existing Equipment For Greater Efficiency
In a sluggish economy, it's all about getting more for your money. For EDO Electronic Systems Group (ESG), that concept meant maximizing space in its newly consolidated manufacturing operation in Deer Park, NY.
The idea was to consolidate into a smaller part of the facility, sell the entire building and then lease back from the new owner only the 350,000 square-foot space ESG needed. This plan also had an aggressive time frame for completion: three months. Pride Equipment, based in Islip, NY, was contracted to manage the project.
To get the most from its smaller space, ESG wanted to make better use of the 30-foot ceilings in its Deer Park factory. By transferring mezzanines from the recently vacated portion of the building and installing three new ones, they transformed "free" vertical space into 20,000 square feet of productive floor space. The result is greater space efficiency and lower operating costs.
Schmidt Structural Products SpaceLoft mezzanines were installed in three separate areas of the plant: stockroom, machine shop, and shipping/receiving. Other than the machine shop location, the consolidation involved more than simply moving and installing new free-standing mezzanines.
In the shipping/receiving portion of the plant, a new Schmidt mezzanine was parked back-to-back with an existing mezzanine. Transition plates were then attached between the two structures to create one large, continuous mezzanine. And, since the expanded mezzanine provided another means of egress, a stairwell previously located in the middle of the old structure was removed – further freeing up valuable floor space on the ground level.
In the stockroom, an interconnected three-tier mezzanine system was built by matching an existing mezzanine with a moved mezzanine and a new structure from Schmidt. Elevator service allows for forklifts to operate on all three levels as well as the ground floor. Interestingly, Pride Equipment was able to execute the installation without interruption to the daily operations of ESG's parts department. "We had two crews working simultaneously," commented Lew Edwards, Director of the Industrial Division at Pride. "And each crew was doing at least two jobs at once."
"We believed that Schmidt was the most capable, highest quality manufacturer with the most experience in the mezzanine business," explained Mitchell Mazer, Manager of Production Engineering at EDO Electronic Systems Group. "While not the lowest cost, Schmidt offered the best-value solution to our facility's consolidation project."
ESG also faced some strict, self-imposed safety requirements. Turned stairwells, escape ladders, and spring-loaded gates were all custom designed by Schmidt to meet the company's specifications. In fact, ESG was one of the first customers to receive Schmidt's new WireWall partition product. The WireWall panels prevent load spillage and protect employees from falling debris.
