CONVERSION ADDS NEW LIFE To Fitness Club In August 1997, Tom Jaklitsch, an owner of World Gym in Setauket, Long Island, NY completed a space conversion in two areas of his existing fitness facility to generate more floorspace and create new profit centers.  The conversion consisted of the addition of second level space in each area, allowing for segregation of weight training and cardiovascular equipment in one section, and providing room for the addition of new team rooms, bathrooms, a pro shop, a reception area, and rented offices in another section. The entire conversion was accomplished without a building addition or time consuming contractor involvement, because it was pre-engineered and manufactured off-site and installed by a single source specializing in such conversions in just a matter of days. In the weight training area, the old space was equivalent to the size of a tennis court. Schmidt Structural Products, the conversion manufacturer, was contracted to design, build, and install an L-shaped structural second floor of approximately 2,000 sq ft, converting the space into two separate areas. The original floor-level space was assigned to weight training, and the second level – previously unused "air" – was assigned to cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills and bicycles, creating an opportunity to dramatically increase memberships.
Certainly, the conversion has done more than add new floorspace; it's added new life and livelihood for World Gym's owners and partners. |
